Purchasing a home is a huge investment and, with it, comes huge responsibility. This is especially true during hurricane season! Appropriately securing your home against potential damages isn’t just protecting your investment, it’s also protecting your family and loved ones.
Inspect your roof
Check for loose tiles, rust, ventilation leaks and proper drainage. You can even hire a licensed professional to inspect your roof and install specialty items including hurricane straps or brace gable ends. Whatever you do, don’t wait until the last minute to make repairs!
Consider storm shutters
Installing either permanent or removable storm shutters could significantly lower the damage incurred by your home in the event of a hurricane. While they are a more expensive option in comparison to plywood, you can rest assured that the storm shutters are properly fitted and designed specifically for your home’s specifications.
Read over your homeowners’ insurance policy. It might be in your best interest to add hurricane specific coverage to your policy. Don’t wait for landfall though! Make sure you speak to your insurance provider prior to the peak of hurricane season.
Have a plan
Staying in your home isn’t always an option. If a mandatory evacuation is issued, it’s important to have a plan already in place. Will you stay with family or friends or is a shelter your best option? Don’t forget about your furry family members either. Where will your pets stay if you’re required to evacuate? Having an evacuation plan in place well in advance will help minimize your stress in an emergency.
It may not be the most exciting aspect of being a homeowner, but trust me when I say a little preparation will go a long way toward ensuring your peace of mind during hurricane season. You’ll protect your investment and, more importantly, you’ll protect your family.
